The Fayetteville Mafia

The Don of the Fayetteville Mafia - Sen. Tony Rand (a Democrat from Cumberland County) introduced a new bill this past week…

Those seeking a bachelor’s degree in the state’s public and private colleges and universities would be required to spend 20 hours a semester tutoring or mentoring students in public elementary, middle or high schools if legislation introduced by Senate Majority Leader Tony Rand becomes law.

This bill deserves further attention.

Molly Broad…glad to be away from UNC?

Molly Broad, former president of the University of North Carolina system, is now the president of the American Council on Education (ACE).

As the unifying voice for higher education, ACE aims to foster greater collaboration and new partnerships within and outside the higher education community to help colleges and universities anticipate and address the challenges of the 21st century and contribute to a stronger nation and a better world.

The Charlotte Observer recently ran an interview with Broad about her new position.

University Lotto’s Andrew Payne has written extensively on Broad, especially her departure from UNC.

Before Broad’s official departure, higher education circles were filled with gossip and rumors about her true fate. Some speculated that her exodus was the culmination of a highly orchestrated campaign to oust her, including secret meetings, closed-door discussions and backroom deals. Don’t be alarmed. That is how most of North Carolina’s political decisions are carried out — just look at the lottery.

There is tremendous animosity towards Broad from members of the General Assembly — especially from the leadership. This hatred stems from her no nonsense personality, non-North Carolinian pedigree and her gender.

Cloak and Dagger Chancellor
Posted by Paul Messino

It’s sad when the only source of information about a public university’s search for a high-level official comes as a leak and not through a press release.

I think every taxpayer should be privy to the conversation for who may be the next chancellor at any public university in our state, especially the state’s "flagship university," the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

We pay for every part of this process, from the meetings, to the interviews, to the paperwork and phone conversations, and eventually the selected official’s salary. And while we’re paying other people to make this selection on our behalf, we are not paying them to keep us in the dark.

Gubernatorial campaign promises fall short

The two major Democratic candidates for governor are running television ads promising free community college tuition and a plan "to make North Carolina’s universities affordable." Since most political ads are more propaganda than truth — I decided to delve deeper into the two candidates’ plans.
